Arabian Racing Tent of Honor 2002
Two very different, but very influential people, were elected into the tent of honor. The first was Robert Raine, one of the industry's first players in Arabian racing. He credits fellow Tent of Honor member Hazel Lucas for getting him started and never letting him get out of racing. As he said in his acceptance speech, every time he'd quit, Hazel called him up and asked him to put a horse in a race. Back to Arabian racing he went. In perhaps the most memorable quote of the weekend, Mr. Raine called Arabian racing a "disease"; one that he's been infected with for 41years. His horses are easily recognizable with the familiar "PS" in front of their names. Robert Raine bred and/or owned such outstanding horses as Malabar Athena, PS Billies Sage, PS Foxy Sage, and PS Roman Sage.

The other honoree in the Tent of Honor was HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum. He has had a great influence in Arabian racing, not just in the U.S., but around the world. Under his farm name Darley Stud Management, he has bought, bred and/or raced many impressive horses in the last 10 years. Last year was no exception when he led all owners by number of wins with 42 from his 65 runners, including standouts such as Velte and Vising. Bill Smith, representing Sheikh Mohammed, graciously accepted the award.
